Sep 29, 2020 at 2:38 PMHamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) takes a majority stake in the new multifunctional terminal ‘Piattaforma Logistica Trieste’ (PLT) in Trieste. There is an option to develop additional space and handling capacities. This is HHLA’s third foreign investment.
(Hamburg/Trieste) Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) acquires a 50.01 percent majority in the multifunctional terminal ‘Piattaforma Logistica Trieste’ (PLT) in the Italian port of Trieste. A corresponding contract was signed on September 28. The investment will be contractually and organizationally assigned to HHLA International GmbH. With this investment, HHLA positions itself in a growth-oriented market in the Adriatic, which offers good development opportunities due to its strategic location. After Odessa (Ukraine) and Tallinn (Estonia), this is HHLA’s third port investment outside of Hamburg.
Angela Titzrath, Chairwoman of the Board of HHLA: “The Adriatic region has developed very dynamically in recent years. As the northernmost port in the Mediterranean, Trieste is the southern gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. The investment is a strategic expansion of our existing port and intermodal network. The terminal opens up opportunities for us to participate in and actively shape new and changing cargo flows. This underscores our ambitions to grow internationally. At the same time, we will strengthen our Hamburg terminals through investments in facilities and technology. We are a Hamburg-based company that is at home in Europe and operates globally.”
HHLA’s investment strengthens growth prospects
Francesco Parisi, Chairman of PLT: “HHLA’s investment strengthens the growth prospects of PLT and the entire port of Trieste. Our development strategy towards Central and Eastern Europe aligns with HHLA’s direction. The position of the new partners confirms us in the development of the terminal expansion we are driving forward.”
The terminal facility is located within the free port zone of Trieste and covers a total area of 28 hectares. In the northern part of the facility, general cargo traffic is primarily handled and logistics services are provided. In the south, the new heart of the terminal is currently being developed: The newly opened area at the deep-water port is set to commence operations in the first quarter of 2021, focusing on the handling of container and RoRo traffic. The capacity of the PLT terminal will then total approximately 300,000 TEU (standard containers), 90,000 RoRo units, and 700,000 tons of general cargo. Additionally, there is an option to significantly expand terminal capacity through adjacent area extensions.
Strategically advantageous location
The strategically advantageous location of the Adriatic port of Trieste offers very good development opportunities for hinterland traffic. The PLT terminal has its own rail connection. Furthermore, HHLA’s rail subsidiary Metrans already connects the port of Trieste with its European intermodal network.
The completion of the transaction is subject to various conditions precedent and is expected to take place in January 2021.
