Customs officers conducted a risk assessment and inspected a parcel that had originally been sent from the United States to Hong Kong. The package was declared as a shipment of plastic figures and decorations. During the inspection, officers discovered the live turtles wrapped in a cardboard box with plastic tape.
The seized animals were handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for further processing.
Further seizure at Shenzhen Bay control point
One day later, on July 11, 2026, customs at the Shenzhen Bay control point seized five more live turtles, which are also considered potentially endangered species. The estimated market value of these animals is about 6,415 USD.
Customs officers inspected an incoming vehicle at the control point. During the inspection, they found the turtles packed in plastic bags and hidden in socks. These animals were also handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for further processing.
The two incidents highlight the efforts of Hong Kong customs authorities to combat the illegal trade in endangered species and ensure the protection of biodiversity.
