Jun 17, 2026 at 7:40 AMPD Ports has expanded its bulk handling capacity at the Teesport port by acquiring a third electrically-hydraulic Liebherr LPS 550 crane. This investment of £5.4 million aims to enhance the port’s infrastructure and enable the processing of a wider range of bulk and breakbulk goods, as the company reports.
Capacity expansion
The new crane complements two models introduced in 2023, which together represented an investment of £8.6 million. With the new equipment, Teesport can handle a broader range of bulk goods, which is expected to improve the ability to reduce emissions and increase unloading speeds. According to PD Ports, these measures will allow for more flexible responses to customer demands.
In addition to the crane, PD Ports has also invested in grabs that are intended to provide a more precise adaptation to different loads and conditions. A newly developed grab for scrap metal reportedly increases the handling capacity from 7.5 cubic meters to 17 cubic meters per unit. This grab is also equipped with lifting points that allow for the transport from land to ship without the need to reconfigure the equipment.
These recent developments are part of a continuous improvement program that has been implemented at Teesport since 2016. During this period, PD Ports claims to have increased bulk handling operations by 263%.
