Jun 8, 2026 at 1:06 PMThe Mazda Motor Corporation and the international logistics provider Nippon Express Co., Ltd. have launched a demonstration study testing the use of biodiesel (HVO) for the transportation of manufacturing vehicles. The initiative, which begins in May 2026, aims to explore the possibilities for decarbonization in logistics for new vehicles and vehicle parts, as well as to promote the societal implementation of alternative fuels.
Mazda aims to achieve complete carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain by 2050. Nippon Express, part of Nippon Express Holding, Inc., also pursues the goal of a carbon-neutral society by 2050 and seeks to contribute to environmental preservation. The demonstration study will be conducted between the plant in the Nishinoura district of Hofu and the manufacturing vehicle yard in Nakanoseki, covering a distance of approximately 12 km. The study is expected to run until the end of the fiscal year 2026, evaluating fuel efficiency, performance, and operational challenges while gathering insights for future expansion.
For the study, biodiesel will be sourced from NX Shoji Co., Ltd. The two trailers used for the demonstration will operate under conditions comparable to those of conventional diesel, including maintenance and inspection practices, in collaboration with Isuzu Motors Limited.
Collaboration to promote alternative fuels
Kazuhiko Sumi, Director and Chief Supply Chain Officer of Mazda, commented on the collaboration:
“It is of great importance for us to work together with Nippon Express on this HVO demonstration. By systematically collecting insights on fuel efficiency and operational aspects in real-world operations and collaborating with regional partners, we will further advance the practical application and expansion of this initiative.”
Osamu Sasaki, Executive Officer and Head of the Mobility Business Sales Department at Nippon Express, emphasized the company’s role as a logistics partner in Mazda’s carbon neutrality initiative. He stated: “We are proud to participate in this HVO-based demonstration. With our expertise in logistics for manufacturing vehicles, we will carefully assess the impact of the fuel switch on transport quality and operations, contributing to the realization of sustainable logistics and the decarbonization of the entire supply chain.”
The two companies plan to expand the circle of like-minded partners based on this demonstration study and advance decarbonization in the supply chain.
