Jun 3, 2026 at 12:48 PMThe African Development Bank (AfDB) further specified its Integrated Aviation Transformation Program (IATP), launched in February in Nairobi, during its annual meeting in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo. The program aims to mobilize investments of USD 7 billion over the next five years and to promote the modernization of fleets, airports, air freight infrastructure, and regional logistics networks.
The bank places particular emphasis on the role of air freight for trade, economic integration, and supply security. Improved air transport connections are expected to accelerate the transport of medicines, vaccines, medical equipment, and other time-sensitive goods. AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah (right) emphasized that Africa needs efficient airlines to support regional integration and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The bank presented the IATP in conjunction with the African Medical Equipment and Medicines Facility (AMEF). Both platforms are based on the same financing architecture and aim to pool public and private investments, reduce risks, and make supply chains more resilient. While IATP focuses on air transport and logistics, AMEF aims to improve Africa’s supply of medicines, vaccines, and medical technology.
According to the AfDB, only 19% of flights within Africa are currently operated by African airlines. The bank estimates the economic losses due to deficiencies in air transport at USD 50 to 100 billion per year. At the same time, only about 40% of the required medicines are available on the continent in a timely manner.
The aviation program also receives support from Japan. Tokyo has allocated USD 10 million for the new risk-sharing facility of the IATP, which aims to facilitate aircraft financing for African airlines. Several conference participants are now calling for a swift transition from the conceptual phase to implementation.
