Jun 3, 2026 at 8:45 AMThe economic impact of Miami International Airport (MIA) reached a new record of $212 billion in 2025. This represents a 17% increase compared to the previous year. The airport, considered a vital economic hub for the southeastern United States, now supports 945,682 jobs in Florida, reflecting a 12% increase. These figures come from a recent report by the consulting firm Martin Associates.
Growth through Passenger and Cargo Traffic
The increase in economic impact is primarily attributed to high demand in passenger and cargo traffic. In 2025, nearly 3.5 million tons of cargo were handled, marking a 13.6% increase. This keeps MIA the busiest cargo airport in the United States and ranks it third worldwide, behind Hong Kong and Shanghai. Passenger numbers also rose to 55.3 million, elevating MIA to eighth place among the busiest airports in the United States.
Daniella Levine Cava, Mayor of Miami-Dade County, commented on the positive developments: “Congratulations to the entire MIA community for another record year that has brought significant benefits to our local economy.” She emphasized that MIA plays a central role as an economic engine for the region and that up to $14 billion is currently flowing into modernization and investment projects to further support growth.
Positive Ratings from Rating Agencies
The positive economic indicators are supported by recent reports from rating agencies. Fitch Ratings, Kroll Bond Rating Agency (KBRA), and Standard & Poor’s Global Ratings (S&P) have given MIA positive outlooks in their ratings for the 2026A and 2026B airport revenue refunding bonds. Fitch confirmed an A+ rating and upgraded the outlook from stable to positive. The agency highlighted that MIA serves as a well-positioned gateway airport for the growing air traffic market in Latin America and plays a significant role as a cargo hub.
KBRA assigned an AA- rating and emphasized the positive outlook based on the stable growth of passenger and cargo traffic. S&P also rated MIA A+ with a stable outlook, reflecting the airport’s strong performance in a growing service sector.
