Jun 2, 2026 at 10:19 AMHD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and BAR Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a strategic partnership for the integration of „WindWings“ into the ship design phase. According to a statement from the companies, this collaboration aims to create technical synergies and explore commercial opportunities that promote the use of wind-assisted propulsion systems in shipping.
Technical development and integration
As part of the memorandum of understanding (MOU), HHI and BAR Technologies will work together on the technical development of the interface between the WindWings control system and HHI’s integrated ship control system. The goal, according to the companies, is to develop methods for performance verification that support a scalable commercial application of the technology.
The agreement reflects both companies‘ confidence in the performance of the three-part rigid wing system of WindWings. According to the companies, this system has the potential to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions in commercial shipping. The collaboration is also expected to advance the expansion of wind-assisted propulsion to various ship segments, including gas carriers.
