May 19, 2026 at 2:54 PMThe Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) has extensively modernized its Chunyun street station in Shanghai. This station, the largest FedEx facility in East China, spans an area of 4,400 square meters and is now equipped with advanced digital and automated technologies. The renovation aims to enhance the capacity for package processing, operational efficiency, and service quality for customers in the city.
The Chunyun street station can sort up to 3,000 packages per hour and processes an average of nearly 12 tons of freight daily. It is responsible for sorting and delivering incoming and outgoing packages as well as freight in various parts of Shanghai. The station works closely with other facilities in the city and the Shanghai International Express and Cargo Hub at Pudong Airport to ensure seamless regional connectivity.
With nearly 240 employees and over 150 delivery vehicles, the station plays a crucial role in supporting customers in healthcare, IT, advanced manufacturing, and cross-border e-commerce. This enables faster and more reliable access to global markets.
Modern work environment and digital integration
The modernized station has been designed as a „next-generation logistics center.“ It introduces a modern workplace model that goes beyond traditional fixed workspaces. Open, shared office spaces promote collaboration and communication. A self-service, secure locker system replaces manual handovers, simplifying the management of devices and permissions while optimizing the daily operations of couriers.
The principle „Ground Operations Lead to the Future“ guides the integration of intelligence, security, efficiency, and sustainability within the facility. Digital technologies are integrated throughout the building, including automated systems for capturing dimensions and weight, which record the size and weight of packages during sorting. This significantly improves speed, accuracy, and data quality.
Sustainability plays a central role in the modernization. The station now operates more than 50 electric delivery vehicles, increasing the electrification of the fleet to over 30%. Additionally, it is equipped with seven charging stations that can simultaneously power 14 electric vehicles. Motion sensors for lighting have been installed in selected office areas to further reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, extensive materials synthesized from industrial solid waste have been used in the exterior renovations to minimize resource waste and enable material recycling.
„As China’s economic center and a key hub for international trade, Shanghai plays a strategic role in the company’s global network,“ said Buay Beng Tan, Vice President of Operations at FedEx China. „This recent enhancement reflects our ongoing commitment to investing in infrastructure and network optimization. By integrating digital and automated solutions and creating a more collaborative workplace, we strengthen the coordination between ground and air transport in East China, enabling teams to respond quickly to customer needs and support the growth of Shanghai as well as China’s foreign trade.“
