May 19, 2026 at 8:11 AMThe Damen Shipyards Group has received approval from Bureau Veritas and the Dutch flag authority for its ‚ASD Tug 2713 Fuel Flexible‘. This allows the tugboat to be operated with methanol in the future. The approval is considered an important step for the use of alternative fuels in compact port and coastal vessels.
The 27.25 m long ‚ASD Tug 2713 FF‘ has been designed for port manoeuvres, terminal services, towing tasks, oil spill response and firefighting operations. The tugs will initially be delivered with diesel propulsion but can also be operated with HVO and later converted to hybrid or methanol propulsion. Methanol tanks and the necessary preparations for alternative propulsion systems are already integrated during construction.
According to Damen, methanol offers advantages due to existing infrastructure and relatively high energy density. Together with Bureau Veritas and the Dutch authority, a special safety concept has been developed, as existing regulations have primarily applied to larger vessels. The new approval is expected to pave the way for further methanol tugs.
