May 12, 2026 at 1:46 PMUnited Cargo has successfully transported a significant cultural treasure from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., to Kona, Hawaii. This treasure is a feathered cloak, known as ‘ahu ‘ula, which was once worn by the Hawaiian chief Kekuaokalani during the Battle of Kuamoʻo in 1819. This repatriation is part of ongoing efforts to return cultural artifacts in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
The ‘ahu ‘ula, dated to the early 19th century, holds profound historical significance for the Hawaiian people. The transport of this delicate artifact was entrusted to United Cargo a year ago and required a specialized logistical solution that considered cultural protocols. It was crucial that the cloak was transported directly to Kona on the island of Hawaii, without a transfer between islands. United Cargo was able to meet these requirements as it offered the only viable route that combined seamless connections with expert handling and cultural sensitivity.
The route led from Washington Dulles International Airport through Denver directly to Kona. This unusual connection avoided additional handling and reduced the risk to the delicate item. Ben Scott, Cargo Sales Account Executive at United Airlines, stated, “We had exactly the right route available – it fit the requirements perfectly.” For compliance with cultural protocols, it was important that the cloak was transported directly to Kona and not via Honolulu.
The transport was conducted under United Cargo’s “UASecure” service, specifically designed for valuable and sensitive shipments. It integrates secure handling protocols, real-time coordination, and specialized expertise to ensure maximum protection throughout the transport process. Scott emphasized, “The product was designed to manage what cannot be replaced. It is meant for exactly such moments – when precision, protection, and reliability are essential.” From origin to destination, the shipment was managed with the utmost care, minimizing touchpoints and maintaining complete control at every stage of the journey.
Scott added, “This was not just another shipment. It was about bringing a piece of history back to where it belongs. Being part of this was incredibly meaningful. It reminds us that at United Cargo, we are not just transporting freight, but connecting cultures and communities. Every shipment tells a story.”
