May 6, 2026 at 7:17 AMThe Mission to Seafarers has appointed Guy Platten as the new chairman. Platten, a Chartered Master Mariner with over 40 years of experience in leadership positions within the maritime industry, succeeds Tom Boardley, whose commitment to the organization is acknowledged. The appointment comes at a time when the needs of seafarers worldwide are complex and urgent.
Platten began his career with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service and has since advocated for the interests of the people who keep global trade moving. He was recognized by Lloyd’s List as one of the 20 most influential figures in the industry and has held leadership positions in various international trade associations, government bodies, and non-profit organizations.
In his role as CEO of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Platten represented the interests of owners and operators of over 80% of the global merchant fleet. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he successfully campaigned for seafarers to be designated as „key workers“ and worked to improve standards for seafarers‘ welfare. For his contributions, he was awarded the Merchant Navy Medal.
A personal commitment to seafarers
“It is a great honor for me to take on the chairmanship of the Mission to Seafarers,” said Platten. “This is not only a new professional chapter for me, but also a kind of homecoming. I know the loneliness, the dangers, and the sacrifices that seafarers make every day. The Mission was a beacon of support back then, and I have never lost my admiration for the extraordinary work they do to help seafarers and their families.” Platten emphasizes that he looks forward to giving back to the organization that has given him so much.
Tom Boardley, who served as chairman of the Mission, also commented on his successor: “It has been a privilege to serve as chairman of the Mission, and I am pleased that Guy will take on this role. During my tenure, I was able to reflect on the great work done by those in the Mission who often work under difficult conditions for the welfare of seafarers.”
Peter Rouch, Secretary General of the Mission, added: “The Mission to Seafarers benefits from expertise across the entire shipping industry. We thank Tom Boardley for the immense experience he brought to his role as chairman. It is gratifying that with Guy Platten, such an experienced and prominent figure will become the next chairman of the Mission. His advice has been valued by many, and we look forward to welcoming him as we face the challenges and opportunities of the coming years and remain committed to helping both seafarers and their families.”
