UECC further reduces emissions
Mar 26, 2026 at 9:32 AMBBC Chartering has signed an agreement with Ahti Climate to ensure compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulations for several vessels. As part of this partnership, BBC Chartering will acquire 5,000 tCO2e through the Ahti Pool to meet its compliance obligations.
Access to emissions management platform
By joining the Ahti Pool, BBC Chartering gains access to a dedicated emissions management platform as well as market-leading pooling mechanisms and bunker procurements designed to enable cost-efficient compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulations. Ahti Pool offers a clear and cost-effective way to meet these requirements. Pool members share compliance obligations across the participating vessels, benefiting from the economies of scale of the pool. Ahti Pool is a neutral solution for compliance with the FuelEU regulations and is not tied to a specific compliance option. According to Ahti Pool’s experience, a typical vessel will require approximately 150 to 200 tCO2e in 2026 to meet compliance targets.
Ahti Pool manages hundreds of vessels from leading owners and operators, including the Van Weelde Group, Bore, Spliethoff, Stenersen, and Neste, overseeing more than 100 million EUR in emissions obligations. The model allows members to transfer emissions savings from over-compliant vessels to those needing additional compliance, thereby avoiding penalties and creating potential financial benefits through the use of renewable green fuels.
Christoph Deters, Chief Operations Officer of BBC Chartering, stated: “After analyzing the available options for compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulations and assessing the required costs and resources, we decided to bring part of the BBC Chartering fleet into the Ahti Pool. Membership in the Ahti Pool allows us to optimize our compliance costs and support our broader decarbonization strategy while maintaining our service model ‚Any port. Any cargo.’”
Risto-Juhani Kariranta, Chief Executive Officer of Ahti Climate, also commented on the partnership: “We are pleased to welcome BBC Chartering to the Ahti Pool. The size, reach, and commitment of BBC to environmentally conscious shipping enhance the pool’s capacity to ensure cost-efficient compliance with the FuelEU regulations. The entry of BBC Chartering into the Ahti Pool is a testament to the ability of our pooling mechanisms to make the transition to greener practices more affordable and practical for shipowners and operators.”
