BGL Sees Toll Doubling as Tax Increase

The toll doubling, which was passed today in the transport committee without changes, is a scandal not only for the medium-sized goods transport industry but also for the population as a whole: In reality, it is a tax increase that will affect a four-person household by several hundred euros per year and will further fuel the already very high inflation in food prices. This particularly impacts households with lower incomes.

(Berlin) This toll increase is also a missed opportunity for the ecological turnaround in freight transport: Due to the bottlenecks in rail transport, this increase will not shift a single ton of freight from road to rail. Furthermore, the traffic light coalition has missed a significant opportunity to provide a clear impetus for the transition to sustainable driving with the additional revenues from the toll increase. With the additional funds from the toll increase amounting to 7.6 billion euros annually, the expansion of electric charging infrastructure could have been significantly advanced, and the acquisition of electric trucks could have been substantially supported in the coming years. Thus, electric trucks will only be able to play a niche role in the coming years.This toll increase is also a shocking sign of ideology and a lack of respect for all those affected, including businesses and private households. The manner in which this law was pushed through parliament without any economic expertise and without regard for factually justified amendments from the significantly affected German middle class is disgraceful. In the end, transport companies and households will pay the price for this economically and citizen-hostile blind flight.
