Mar 31, 2021 at 3:44 PMHGK Shipping is taking the next milestone towards sustainable and innovative inland shipping. At the end of March, the shipping company commissioned the construction of a Type C tanker at the Dutch shipyard Scheepsreparatiebedrijf De Gerlien van Tiem, which is intended to meet the current and future requirements of inland shipping.
(Cologne) With this, HGK Shipping is diligently continuing its strategic newbuilding program for its own inland shipping fleet under the motto “Innovation & Sustainability.” With the flexibly deployable tank motor vessel “Synthese 18,” the company is once again implementing a low-water optimized concept in combination with an alternative drive technology, this time for liquid chemical products.
Norbert Meixner, Business Unit Director Liquid Chemicals, HGK Shipping: “After the ‘Gas 94’, which will be in operation for HGK Gas Shipping starting this autumn, we are now also continuing to expand our fleet with particularly future-proof ships in the area of Liquid Chemicals. This is an important step for us, as innovation and sustainability are fundamental in chemical logistics to provide the industry with suitable transport solutions – today as well as in the future.”
Commissioning in 2022
The commissioning of the new chemical tanker is scheduled to take place as early as 2022. The shipyard De Gerlien van Tiem, based in Druten, Netherlands, has already implemented unique and complex concepts for the shipping company multiple times, most recently the conversion of a dry cargo coaster into a liquid chemicals coaster. This partnership is now being continued with the contract signing on March 26, 2021.
“We are pleased to realize this innovative Type C tanker with De Gerlien van Tiem. The concept has incorporated practical features and optimization potentials over months at HGK Shipping. Ultimately, De Gerlien van Tiem has best captured our engineering concept and convinced us with their technical specifications,” says Tim Gödde, Business Unit Director Ship Management, HGK Shipping, adding: “Our two companies share a close collaboration that has existed for years. Through various joint projects, we have already been able to thoroughly convince ourselves of the competence and quality work of the shipyard team.”
Long-standing Partnership
As a long-standing partner of the chemical industry, HGK Liquid Chemicals supplies various industries with liquid light and heavy chemicals as well as non-hazardous liquid goods. The tanker fleet of this business unit transports around 6 million tons of liquid goods annually on the Rhine and its tributaries, in the northwestern German canal area, as well as in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands.
