May 21, 2026 at 12:10 PMNorfolk Southern has announced plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. As part of these celebrations, a new locomotive series titled „America’s 250th“ will be introduced, consisting of six uniquely designed locomotives. These locomotives will be showcased along the East Coast on a tour that includes public and community events in various cities. A central element of the celebrations is the arrival of the Big Boy No. 4014, the largest operational steam locomotive in the world, which will tour Norfolk Southern’s network starting May 25.
Overall, the train, which includes the „America’s 250th“ locomotive series, historic business cars, and the Big Boy No. 4014, will travel along the East Coast. This provides Norfolk Southern employees, railroad enthusiasts, and local communities the opportunity to experience historical events throughout the summer.
„Railroads built this country by connecting communities, powering industries, and creating opportunities across generations,“ said Mark George, President and CEO of Norfolk Southern. „In honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the new locomotive series and the historic journey of the Big Boy pay tribute to this legacy and highlight the employees, infrastructure, and innovations that continue to drive America forward today.“
The new locomotives in detail
The commemorative locomotives are inspired by significant American symbols and reflect the role of railroads in connecting people, places, and commerce for nearly two centuries. The series includes tributes to the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, the American bald eagle, and the patriotic heritage of Norfolk Southern. It also honors the role of predecessor companies that transported national symbols across the country.
The locomotives will travel on key freight corridors shaped by Norfolk Southern and its predecessor companies, connecting historic railroad communities with modern supply chains that drive the U.S. economy. Together, the locomotives reflect the pride, resilience, and heritage of the railroads that are woven into America’s history.
As part of the celebrations, a limited edition of merchandise for the 250th anniversary will be offered, including hats, mugs, and other collectibles available in limited quantities at the NS Company Store.
Public and internal events
Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific will host public events at several locations along the network during the tour. The dates are as follows:
– June 10 — Buffalo, New York
– June 15-16 — Scranton, Pennsylvania
– July 4-5 — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
– July 9-10 — Altoona, Pennsylvania
– July 14 — Fostoria, Ohio
In addition to the public events, internal celebrations will take place to honor Norfolk Southern employees who operate the network daily and to highlight the long-standing connection of the railroad to the communities it serves in the Midwest and Northeast.
Norfolk Southern is seizing the opportunity to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States and to honor the legacy of railroads that contributed to the founding and unification of the nation. This also underscores the goals of the planned merger with Union Pacific, which aims to create a seamless freight transportation network that connects East and West as America’s first transcontinental railroad.
