May 21, 2026 at 1:53 PMThe Addu Regional Free Zone was officially opened on May 13, 2026. This measure is part of the Maldivian government’s efforts to establish free zones in the northern and southern regions of the country. The opening ceremony took place at Addu High School and was led by Mohamed Saeed, the Minister of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade, as well as Ali Ihusan, the Minister of Internal Security, Labor, and Technology.
With the opening of the Addu Regional Free Zone, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) offers interested companies the opportunity to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the storage of cargo and related activities in the free zone until June 11, 2026. This initiative aims to promote economic development in the region and create new business opportunities.
The establishment of free zones is viewed by the government as a strategic step to advance economic diversification and enhance the attractiveness of the Maldives for investors. The Addu Regional Free Zone is expected to play a central role in these efforts by attracting companies engaged in logistics, trade, and services.
The opening of the free zone is considered an important step in the economic development of the Maldives, as it aims to improve the infrastructure and conditions for businesses. The government of the island nation in the Indian Ocean hopes that the free zone will not only support local businesses but also attract international investors who can contribute to job creation and strengthen the economy.
