Mar 18, 2026 at 9:26 AMThe arrival of 28 fully electrified machines at APM Terminals Suape marks a significant advancement in the construction of the first fully electrified port site in Latin America. The machines, supplied by SANY and representing an investment of USD 47 million, enable the commencement of the technical phases that will prepare the terminal in the Governador Eraldo Gueiros industrial and port complex in Pernambuco for operation.
With an estimated total investment of USD 350 million, the construction of the Brazilian terminal is nearing completion and entering its final phase. Daniel Rose, Managing Director of APM Terminals Suape and Pecém, emphasizes: “This is a crucial step for the project, which is now entering the final construction phase of the terminal’s main infrastructure.”
Economic Impact and Capacity Expansion
The new terminal in Pernambuco is expected to enhance competitiveness for exporters while reducing costs for imported components and consumer goods. By extending berthing times and enabling more ship calls, connectivity to global markets will be strengthened, potentially attracting new direct connections to the Far East and Europe. With a capacity of up to 400,000 TEU, representing a 55% increase for the port complex, the project will support regional economic activity and create new direct and indirect jobs. More than 2,000 direct jobs have already been created, in addition to thousands of indirect employment opportunities.
“With the start of operations in the second half of 2026, the terminal will have an initial capacity of up to 400,000 TEU per year and will enhance the efficiency, safety, and logistical competitiveness of Pernambuco and the entire Northeast region. This solidifies APM Terminals Suape as one of the most significant private investments in the region’s port infrastructure,” Rose added.
Technological Innovations and Safety Aspects
A key feature of the equipment at APM Terminals Suape is complete electrification, which eliminates the need for fossil fuels in operational processes and supports the company’s global decarbonization goals. A ceremony to celebrate the arrival of the equipment took place on March 9, attended by the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, and the Governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra.
The two Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes have a reach of 70 meters and are capable of servicing ships longer than 366 meters, the largest on the Brazilian coast. In the terminal area, seven rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTG) will support the safe and productive handling of containers.
Additionally, the equipment includes advanced technologies aimed at increasing safety and efficiency, including precision systems that support accurate movements and prevent collisions to protect both cargo and machinery. The fleet is complemented by two reach stackers, a 16-ton forklift, two forklifts for empty containers, and 14 terminal tractors.
