FedEx receives halal certification
Feb 27, 2026 at 11:39 AMNavi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) laid the foundation stone for a new automated air cargo center on February 18, 2026. This project, supported by FedEx with a long-term investment of over $300 million, aims to expand capacities in India’s largest international trade corridor. The planned 27,870 m² cargo center will serve as a regional hub, connecting India with Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the USA.
Strategic Importance for Trade
The ceremony was attended by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, as well as senior representatives from FedEx and Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL). Jeet Adani, Director of AAHL, emphasized that the project reflects NMIA’s long-term vision of creating integrated infrastructures that enhance India’s competitiveness in trade. The proximity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port and key industrial corridors, as well as multimodal transport networks, positions NMIA as a significant player in the global logistics sector.
Kami Viswanathan, President of FedEx for the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa (MEISA), stated that India’s competitiveness in global trade increasingly depends on the reliability and speed of logistics infrastructure. The establishment of the center at NMIA enables the integration of global network strength with India’s fastest-growing trade corridor, providing customers with greater security and speed.
The new cargo center will be equipped with modern automated sorting systems, dimensional scanners, and high-speed screening technology. These technologies will allow for the simultaneous processing of incoming and outgoing shipments, improving flexibility in route planning and predictability of transit times, especially for valuable and time-sensitive goods such as electronics, engineering products, pharmaceuticals, and perishables. The enhanced reliability is also expected to strengthen export and import opportunities for SMEs and contribute to lower logistics costs and faster turnaround times.
The cargo infrastructure at NMIA will start with an initial capacity of approximately 0.5 million tons per year and will scale up to about 2.6 million tons in the final development phase. This phased capacity expansion supports the airport’s long-term strategy to position the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as one of India’s most advanced air cargo and logistics centers. With this new hub, FedEx continues to expand its presence in India and supports NMIA’s role as an integrated platform for aviation and multimodal trade in global supply chains.
