Feb 27, 2026 at 12:20 PMThe current challenges in the field of shore power supply in the UK are not primarily technical in nature, but rather economic, NatPower Marine recently stated in a communication. This is clearly evident in the publicly funded projects in Aberdeen and Portsmouth, which reveal structural flaws in the commercial model. High electricity prices in the industry mean that for some ships, it is more economical to burn diesel rather than connect to the clean power supply.
According to the company, the situation raises questions that go far beyond local price anomalies. It warns that without fundamental reforms, investor confidence and the willingness to electrify the fleet are at risk. Maritime decarbonization requires not isolated port facilities, but a comprehensive infrastructure at the corridor level to support the transition to environmentally friendly technologies.
