Sallaum Lines presents “MV Ocean Legacy”
Feb 5, 2026 at 10:11 AMThe Port of Virginia has recently expanded its capacity to handle ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs). With the commissioning of four new, fully electric Suez-class container cranes at Norfolk International Terminals (NIT), the port claims to be able to simultaneously process ULCVs.
The new container cranes complement the existing fleet of 29 crane systems in the deep-water area, which, according to the port, are designed to handle the largest container ships in transatlantic traffic. Sarah J. McCoy, interim CEO and Executive Director of the Virginia Port Authority, emphasizes that this infrastructure investment sends a signal to shipping companies to increase their throughput at the Port of Virginia. „Our berth capacity is growing. We currently have four berths for ULCVs and will soon be able to accommodate five ULCVs simultaneously,“ McCoy stated.
McCoy assures that future requirements for ship sizes and cargo volumes will not exceed the port’s capacities. „We ensure readiness at our berths, in our cargo facilities, at the truck processing facilities, at the rail ramps, and in our navigation channels,“ she added.
