Jan 13, 2026 at 10:11 AMSun Country Airlines plans to open a new operational base at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) in 2026. This decision is part of a strategic expansion aimed at supporting both the company’s cargo operations and the planned growth of its scheduled passenger flight network.
Strategic Location Choice
CVG was selected due to its role as a significant air cargo hub for Amazon. The airport is among the fastest-growing cargo airports in the U.S., and the region shows a high demand for passenger flights. These factors position Sun Country optimally for future expansion in scheduled flights. The new base will serve as the primary location for the stationing of cargo aircraft, allowing local crews to begin and end their flight assignments. The official opening of the base is scheduled for January 31, 2026.
Jude Bricker, President and CEO of Sun Country, commented on the expansion plans: “Expanding beyond Minneapolis-St. Paul has long been a goal of Sun Country, and we are excited to take this important step. Our cargo operations are a vital part of our business model and enable us to provide flexible and growing services in scheduled air travel. This base will support our efficiency and service while also providing new advancement opportunities for our pilots.”
Personnel Needs and Future Plans
Sun Country Airlines is actively seeking pilots for the new base in CVG. Additionally, the airline is exploring further locations to support the growth of its cargo and scheduled services.
The opening of the base coincides with the announcement of a planned merger between Sun Country and Allegiant Airlines. This merger aims to create a larger leisure aviation company in the U.S. that will benefit from complementary networks and a strengthened balance sheet. The proposed consolidation would connect Allegiant’s point-to-point leisure system with Sun Country’s hybrid strategy, which includes scheduled passenger flights, charter flights, and dedicated cargo operations.
CVG’s role as a significant e-commerce and air cargo hub is expected to be crucial for Sun Country’s future growth. The new base aims to improve personnel availability, strengthen operational resilience, and optimize cargo connectivity as the airline prepares for the next phase under the new structure.
