De faciliteit is strategisch gelegen aan het Schelde-Rijnkanaal, tussen de havens van Antwerpen-Brugge en Rotterdam, en zal fungeren als een consolidatiecentrum in de Noordzee-Rijn-Middellandse Zee corridor, een van de belangrijkste transportwegen van Europa. Met een investering van 75 miljoen EUR wordt een jaarlijkse capaciteit van 325.000 TEU bereikt, wat de inzet van H.Essers voor de binnenvaart in het Europese containertransport onderstreept. De nieuwe terminal vervangt bovendien de bestaande inlandterminal in Bergen op Zoom.<\/p>\n<h3>Moderne infrastructuur voor het Europese transport<\/h3>\n<p>Het beschikt over 350 m kade, een terrein van 6,5 ha en een opslagcapaciteit voor 25.000 containers, inclusief faciliteiten voor koelgoed en gevaarlijke stoffen (ADR). Daarnaast is de opslagruimte uitgebreid met 45.000 m\u00b2, zodat H.Essers nu in totaal 210.000 m\u00b2 opslagruimte in Bergen op Zoom ter beschikking heeft. Dagelijks varen er twee binnenvaartverbindingen van de H.Essers Container Terminal naar Rotterdam en Antwerpen. Op de locatie zijn 150 medewerkers werkzaam, die indirect 300 extra arbeidsplaatsen ondersteunen.<\/p>\n<p>Een cruciaal locatievoordeel is de ligging van de nieuwe terminal. De oude terminal bevond zich binnen de dijken, achter de sluis Burgemeester Peterssluis en een smal kanaal, wat betekende dat alleen kleinere binnenvaartschepen de kade konden bereiken. De nieuwe H.Essers Container Terminal ligt buiten de dijken, direct aan het Schelde-Rijnkanaal, en is daardoor 24\/7 toegankelijk voor grotere schepen.<\/p>\n<p>Deze locatiekeuze heeft directe gevolgen voor het containertransport in Europa. In de havens van Antwerpen-Brugge en Rotterdam gelden minimale aanroepgroottes voor binnenvaartschepen die aan hun terminals afmeren. Schepen moeten met een bepaalde minimale hoeveelheid containers aanleggen om de kade effici\u00ebnt te kunnen gebruiken. Deze eis is bijzonder relevant, aangezien beide zeehavens steeds vaker met overbelasting te maken hebben en elke ligplaats zorgvuldig moet worden gepland. De H.Essers Container Terminal biedt een naadloze oplossing: Kleinere binnenvaartstromen worden ter plaatse geconsolideerd op grotere schepen die voldoen aan de vereiste aanroepgroottes. Hierdoor blijft het transport van de containers continu op het water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eDe H.Essers Container Terminal is meer dan alleen een infrastructureel project\u201c, legt Gert Bervoets, CEO van H.Essers, uit. \u201eDeze locatie tussen Antwerpen en Rotterdam, direct aan de Noordzee-Rijn-Middellandse Zee corridor, biedt een logistiek model dat minder afhankelijk is van wegverkeer en volledig ge\u00efntegreerd is in de hoofdcorriodoren van Europa. Voor onze klanten betekent dit snellere en beter planbare verbindingen tussen Antwerpen en Rotterdam. Voor de regio en Europa betekent het minder druk op de wegen en een lagere CO2-voetafdruk per container.\u201c<\/p>\n<h3>Milieuvriendelijke inrichting en regionale impact<\/h3>\n<p>De H.Essers Container Terminal is ontworpen met bijzondere aandacht voor zijn milieuvriendelijkheid. De operatie maakt gebruik van emissievrije portaalkranen en 19.000 zonnepanelen. Afgemeerde schepen kunnen tijdens het aanleggen hun dieselgeneratoren uitschakelen via walstroom. Op de lange termijn zal de faciliteit ook worden uitgerust als laadpunt voor de ge\u00eblektrificeerde binnenvaart van de toekomst. De ligging buiten de dijken leidt tot een significante vermindering van de stikstofemissies.<\/p>\n<p>De nieuwe terminal aanvult de bestaande diensten van H.Essers in de regio, waaronder douaneafhandeling, opslag van gevaarlijke stoffen en waarde toevoegende activiteiten zoals het vullen.
