De beslissing werd genomen vanwege aanzienlijke financi\u00eble druk, veroorzaakt door stijgende brandstofprijzen en een verminderde vliegactiviteit. Het bedrijf maakte bekend dat de zaken nu worden geleid door de curatoren Stuart Morris, Robert Fishman en David Soden van Teneo Financial Advisory.<\/p>\n<p>In een verklaring gaf Teneo aan dat het faillissement te wijten is aan een periode van financi\u00eble moeilijkheden, die werden versterkt door dalende opdrachten en stijgende operationele kosten. De luchtvaartmaatschappij heeft de activiteiten stopgezet en ziet zich genoodzaakt om ontslagen te geven. De getroffen medewerkers worden prioriteit gegeven in de informatievoorziening, terwijl de curatoren ook contact opnemen met klanten, leveranciers en schuldeisers.<\/p>\n<p>European Cargo werd opgericht in april 2020 om tijdens de COVID-19-pandemie medische apparatuur voor de Britse regering te vervoeren. De luchtvaartmaatschappij maakte gebruik van een vloot van omgebouwde Airbus A340-600, die oorspronkelijk van verschillende luchtvaartmaatschappijen zoals Virgin Atlantic en Iberia waren aangeschaft. Aanvankelijk opereerde de luchtvaartmaatschappij de vliegtuigen zonder passagiersstoelen, voordat ze in 2022 werden omgebouwd naar een permanente vrachtconfiguratie.<\/p>\n<h3>Financi\u00eble uitdagingen en stopzetting van de activiteiten<\/h3>\n<p>Volgens de laatste financi\u00eble rapporten vertoonde European Cargo voor het jaar 2024 een nettoverlies van 26 miljoen USD bij een omzet van 136 miljoen USD. Dit is een lichte verbetering ten opzichte van een nettoverlies van 30,6 miljoen USD in 2023. Ondanks de stijgende inkomsten door de uitbreiding van de vloot en de bedrijfsvoering was de luchtvaartmaatschappij niet in staat om de financi\u00eble uitdagingen het hoofd te bieden.<\/p>\n<p>De laatste vluchten vonden plaats op 19 mei 2026, voordat de gehele vloot van laatst zes A340-600 aan de grond bleef. Het faillissement werd officieel op 3 juni bekendgemaakt. Medewerkers meldden dat ze via Microsoft Teams over hun ontslagen werden ge\u00efnformeerd, wat de onzekerheid en druk binnen het bedrijf benadrukt.<\/p>\n<p>De stijgende brandstofprijzen, vooral als gevolg van geopolitieke spanningen in het Midden-Oosten, hebben de operationele kosten voor minder brandstofeffici\u00ebnte vliegtuigen zoals de A340-600 verhoogd. Dit heeft ertoe geleid dat sommige vrachtbedrijven zijn overgestapt op effici\u00ebntere vliegtuigen om de economische druk te verlichten.<\/p>\n<p>European Cargo bood recentelijk ook <a href=\"https:\/\/transportjournal.com\/2026\/03\/03\/cargo-flights-to-china-from-teesside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vrachtvluchten tussen China en de Teesside International Airport<\/a> aan en had een operationele basis op de luchthaven in het noordoosten van Engeland opgezet.
