Achtergrond is een op 1 mei uitgevaardigd decreet van de Amerikaanse regering, dat de sancties tegen het Caribische eiland heeft verscherpt.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens beide bedrijven worden er voorlopig geen nieuwe boekingen voor Cuba aangenomen. De maatregel is genomen in verband met de huidige Amerikaanse richtlijnen. President Donald Trump heeft begin mei een decreet ondertekend dat sancties oplegt aan personen en buitenlandse banken en bedrijven die actief zijn in belangrijke sectoren van de Cubaanse economie. Dit omvat energie, mijnbouw, defensie en financi\u00eble diensten.<\/p>\n<p>De scheepvaart wordt in de tekst niet expliciet genoemd. Aangezien rederijen echter gebruikmaken van staatshavenfaciliteiten die worden beheerd door het Cubaanse ministerie van Defensie, zien zij zich genoodzaakt hun activiteiten aan te passen om mogelijke secundaire sancties te vermijden.<\/p>\n<p>Naast het sinds 1962 bestaande embargo hebben de VS recentelijk ook de beperkingen voor olielevingen naar Cuba verscherpt.
