Erion werd door de Albanese autoriteiten in beslag genomen, nadat de slechte houdomstandigheden op een particulier terrein bekend werden. Er wordt vermoed dat de leeuw deel uitmaakte van de illegale handel in wilde dieren. Zijn exacte afkomst is niet vastgesteld.<\/p>\n<h3>Transport over meerdere landen<\/h3>\n<p>Het transport van Erion over meer dan 2.000 kilometer door zeven Europese landen duurde vier dagen. Gedurende deze tijd werd de leeuw volgens het douanekantoor begeleid door gespecialiseerde dierenartsen en ervaren dierenbeschermings- en transportteams, die zorgden voor zijn verzorging en veiligheid.<\/p>\n<p>Het douanekantoor Pirmasens was betrokken bij de invoer van het dier. Bij aankomst in het wilddierenstation controleerden douanebeambten samen met een dierenarts de identiteit van de leeuw. De zogenaamde identificatiebevestiging moet ervoor zorgen dat het dier daadwerkelijk is aangekomen. In dit geval werd dit gecontroleerd aan de hand van een ge\u00efmplanteerde microchip en de afstemming met de bijbehorende papieren.<\/p>\n<p>Karin Schmidt, woordvoerster van het Hauptzollamt Saarbr\u00fccken, benadrukte de verantwoordelijkheid van de douane in de grensoverschrijdende goederen- en dierenverkeer: \u201eOnze taak is om de naleving van de wettelijke voorschriften te controleren.
