Momenteel wordt minder dan \u00e9\u00e9n procent van de nieuwe handelsschepen in de Verenigde Staten gebouwd. De sector beschikt volgens het Witte Huis over in totaal 66 scheepswerven, waaronder acht actieve werven, 11 werven met bouwplaatsen, 22 reparatiewerven met droogdokfaciliteiten en 25 werven die uitsluitend verantwoordelijk zijn voor de bouw van dekken. Deze cijfers maken volgens de mededeling duidelijk dat de VS niet over de benodigde capaciteit beschikken om nationale prioriteiten te vervullen.<\/p>\n<h3>Concurrentiedruk en veiligheidszorgen<\/h3>\n<p>Om deze uitdagingen het hoofd te bieden, heeft de Trump-regering maatregelen genomen om de scheepsbouwcapaciteiten te herstellen. Op 9 april 2025 ondertekende de president de Executive Order (E.O.) 14269 met de titel &#8222;Restoring America&#8217;s Maritime Dominance&#8220;. Deze verordening roept op tot de ontwikkeling van een &#8222;Maritime Action Plan&#8220; (MAP), dat stappen schetst voor de herleving van de maritieme industriesector. Het document houdt rekening met zowel binnenlandse als internationale factoren.<\/p>\n<p>De ontwikkeling van het MAP vindt plaats in samenwerking met verschillende ministeries, waaronder het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, het kantoor van de president voor nationale veiligheidszaken, het bureau voor beheer en begroting, evenals de ministeries van Defensie, Handel, Arbeid, Verkeer en Binnenlandse Veiligheid.
