Professor Hilton Staniland, CEO van SRI, wijst erop dat deze problematiek alleen kan worden opgelost als fundamentele structurele tekortkomingen in de scheepvaartsector worden aangepakt.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Staniland benadrukt dat er veel verantwoordelijke scheepseigenaren zijn die zich inzetten voor de naleving van normen, maar dat de concurrentieomstandigheden in de sector onevenwichtig zijn. Dit stelt gewetenloze eigenaren in staat om zowel schepen als bemanningen onder precarie omstandigheden te exploiteren en hen in geval van problemen in de steek te laten. Ondanks de inspanningen van de Internationale Arbeidsorganisatie (ILO) en de Internationale Maritieme Organisatie (IMO) om transparantie en verantwoording te bevorderen, zullen veel uitdagingen blijven bestaan.<\/p>\n<p>In april 2026 zal het onderwerp opnieuw aan de orde komen tijdens de vergadering van de juridische commissie van de IMO. De centrale vraag blijft of de internationale gemeenschap bereid is om verder te gaan dan louter bezorgdheid en concrete maatregelen te nemen om de bestaande mazen in de wet te dichten, zoals SRI
