Terwijl het spoor een emissiearme alternatieve biedt voor het vervoer van mensen en goederen, blijft het wegverkeer de dominante sector.<\/p>\n<p>Vervoer is van cruciaal belang voor de moderne samenleving en de Europese economie, zoals het Milieuagentschap meldt. Het ondersteunt meer dan 10 miljoen banen en draagt ongeveer 5% bij aan het bruto binnenlands product van de EU. Desondanks is de vervoerssector volgens het rapport de enige grote sector waarin de broeikasgasemissies sinds 1990 zijn gestegen. In 2023 was de sector verantwoordelijk voor ongeveer een derde van de EU-broeikasgasemissies, waarbij het wegverkeer het grootste aandeel had.<\/p>\n<h3>Uitdagingen bij de emissiereductie<\/h3>\n<p>De EU-doelstellingen, waaronder klimaatneutraliteit tegen 2050 en de nul-emissiedoelstellingen voor 2030, vereisen ingrijpende maatregelen, zoals het rapport onthult. Ondanks de vooruitgang bij het verminderen van de uitlaatgasemissies in het verleden, blijft het verkeer een drukfactor voor milieu en mens. Emissies van bepaalde verontreinigende stoffen, zoals ammoniak (NH\u2083) en distikstofoxide (N\u2082O), zijn nog steeds moeilijk te verminderen. Bovendien heeft de geluidsoverlast door verkeer invloed op miljoenen mensen in heel Europa. Het wegverkeer domineert zowel het personen- als het goederenvervoer, zoals uit het rapport blijkt. In 2023 was het verantwoordelijk voor bijna driekwart van de verkeersgerelateerde broeikasgasemissies. Fossiele brandstoffen zijn verantwoordelijk voor meer dan 90% van het energieverbruik.<\/p>\n<p>In tegenstelling tot het wegverkeer biedt het spoorvervoer volgens het rapport een hoge energie-effici\u00ebntie en lage emissies van broeikasgassen en luchtverontreinigende stoffen. Het vormt een optie om de ecologische voetafdruk te verkleinen. Dit geldt vooral voor middellange en lange afstanden, zoals het Milieuagentschap opmerkt. Desondanks blijft het Europese spoorwegnet gefragmenteerd, en de beperkte grensoverschrijdende integratie beperkt de mogelijkheden.
