ITJ 11-12/2022

Dear readers,

Everyone agrees that the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February ignited a new era. Who would have thought that the technical term logistics, which originated in military parlance, would return to its origins in this way?

The European conflict in Ukraine is already reshuffling the cards of the transport and logistics industry across the continent. Behind the human tragedies there are technical casualties too. Thus the largest cargo plane of its kind, the unique Antonov AN-225 Mriya (‘dream’), has been destroyed.

We’ll continue to report online and in print on what the developments mean for our industry, and continue to include news on Russian and Eurasian freight transport in the ITJ. For us, not all Russians and all things Russian are the same thing.

Either way, the effects of the latest sanctions will continue. In 2014, the port of Hamburg, for example, recorded 300,000 teu less traffic to and from Russia, due to the sanctions imposed after that country’s annexation of Crimea. The sooner a peaceful solution is found, the less economic disruption there will be.

With sincerely peaceful greetings,

Christian Doepgen
