Sailors’ Society supports crew of "Heroic Idun"
Members of the Sailors’ Society’s global crisis response network travelled to Cape Town on 6 June 2023 to welcome back the 26 crew of the “MT Heroic Idu” after supporting them and their families through a ten-month detention by Nigerian authorities.
The CRN team was then available for three days to offer pastoral and psychosocial support, as needed, and to help prepare the crew to be reunited with their families after this ordeal.
The crew of 16 Indians, eight Sri Lankans, one Pole and one Filipino arrived in port on 7 June and stayed in a local hotel while they were waiting for flights to take them home.
The international maritime charity has been in contact with the crew since they were first detained in August 2022, after the crew was accused of attempted oil theft and faking a piracy attack. (cj)
