Work starts on pier extension in Koper
Construction work for the extension of the southern part of pier I in the Slovenian port of Koper has begun. The quayside is expected to be completed in March 2021; it will bring the quay to a length of 695 m. The first phase of the project consists of a 34-m-wide quayside extension of more than 98 m.
In the second phase, around 25,000 sqm of additional stacking areas for containers will be constructed, with these works due to be completed in 2022. The extension of pier I brings the Luka Koper container terminal's annual capacity to 1.3 million teu.
The capacity is later expected to increase further, to 1.5 million teu/year, on account of optimisation measures for terminal processes. Investment in the works, including new stacking areas, comes to EUR 45.6 million. (mw)
