Work begins on Bremen's Columbus quay
Work on the construction of the new Columbus quay in Bremerhaven began in early November. A large part of the construction is scheduled for completion in autumn 2023.
By then, 620 m of quay will have been driven into the Weser silt, the spaces in between filled with sand, secured and new passenger bridges installed. The final section of the new building, 800 m long in total, will then be completed.
Since the construction of Container Terminal 4 a decade and a half ago, this is the largest quay construction project to be launched by the port management company bremenports.
All in all, 11,000 t of steel will be used. By advancing the new sheet pile wall, roughly 17,000 sqm of land will be reclaimed from the water. (sh)
