Wind power for Tharsis
In the Netherlands, Tharsis Sea-River Shipping has inked a contract with two partners of the wind-craft industry, e-Conowind and NG shipyard, about a new wind-assist installation. The Dutch companies contracted to install two of their wind-assist 3 x 9 m twin foil units on their first ship, the 88 m long and 2,370 dwt diesel-electric powered general cargo vessel MV “Tharsis”.
“We always try to use as little as fuel as possible on our weekly voyage from Duisburg to the East coast of the UK. Adding wind-assisted propulsion will further reduce our fuel consumption,” said Jan Albert Bosma, co-owner of Tharsis Sea-River Shipping.
The two wind units are fabricated as aluminium constructions in order to stay under the 2.5 t of total weight as needed for the operations on the vessel.
The installation of the system will be the last of five installations under the EU-funded WASP (wind assisted ship propulsion) project and it is scheduled for February 2021. (cd)
