Wilhelmshaven rising further
The German Jade Weserport Wilhelmshaven benefited from the rupture of many supply chains in 2021, with the Eurogate Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven posting a 68.5% increase in throughput last year.
Nearly 713,000 teu, more containers than at any time since the port began operating nearly ten years ago, passed over the quays at the site of Germany's only deep-water container port in 2021. In 2020, the figure had been around 423,000 teu.
Lower Saxony's minister of economic affairs Bernd Althusmann: "Jade Weser Ports has thus not only compensated for last year's corona-related decline, but also exceeded the best pre-crisis result of 2018 (almost 656,000 teu)."
The significant increase in unscheduled ship calls and the pandemic-related temporary route changes of services from other Northern European ports to Wilhelmshaven played an important role.
"Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's fifth-largest shipping companies, has now gained a stake in Jade Weser Port, and the terminal operator Eurogate has also announced that it will invest around EUR 150 million over the next three years. This means that our deep-water port has very good growth prospects in the coming years due to the trend towards ever larger container ships," Althusmann continued. (sh)
