Wilhelmshaven: New tracks for port railway
Around 15 freight trains with up to 52 wagons and a total load of more than 2,000 t use the NPorts railway tracks in Rüstersieler Groden (Lower Saxony, Germany) every week.
From April to the end of July this year, the port operator renewed the rail sections 1 to 3. The upgrade included replacing the timber sleepers by safer and more durable concrete sleepers, the laying of new rail tracks and the preparation of the ballast bed along the 2.3 km long stretch. Several switches on the rail track were also renewed.
Around EUR 1.5 million were invested in the project. The coal trains with the heaviest loads are already passing through the Rüstersieler Groden. The upgrade had become necessary in order to equip the railway for the future. (ben)
