Wilhelmshaven: better rail links by the end of 2022

A groundbreaking ceremony has now kicked off the second construction phase for the expansion of the rail track to Germany’s deep-water JadeWeserPort in Wilhemshaven. By the end of 2022, the Oldenburg–Wilhelmshaven section will be double-track and electrified all the way.

The purpose of this project is to increase railfreight’s market share from 18% to 25%, which will be equivalent to reducing the number of truck journeys on German roads by 13 million per annum.

Upon completion of the project, state-of-the-art electric railcars will run every 30 minutes on the 70 km stretch between Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven at a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

The JadeWeserPort is Germany’s only container port that can handle the newest generation of container ships round the clock every day. (ben)
