Weight gain for Spanish fleet in 2018


Spain's weight has grown in the maritime field. On 1 January 2019, the merchant shipping fleet controlled by Spanish shipping companies had 220 merchant ships, weighing almost 4.5 million gt. Compared to 2017, there are 9 units more and tonnage rose by 8.9%.

 

The portion of this fleet that operates under the Spanish flag (in all cases registered in the Special Registry of the Canary Islands), encompassed 115 units in 2018, the same as in 2017. However, the gross tonnage in 2018 fell by 5.5 % to 2.16 million gt.

 

The fleet that operates under foreign flags increased by nine units to 105 ships with 2.33 million gt (+26.3%) in 2018. Eight newbuilds with around 420,000 gt were added to the Spanish control fleet in 2018. The new vessels' price tag was about EUR 450 million. (kd)
