Watco wins cattle transport contract
After a competitive procurement process, Watco East West has been given the mandate to operate cattle rail transport services in Australia from 2022 to 2028.
The contract with the government in Queensland includes the transport of herds of cattle from regional hubs in central-west and south-west parts of the state by train. This alternative reduces wear and tear on Queensland’s roads and eases traffic congestion.
A key aim of this contract is therefore to increase the amount of cattle transported by rail services, the government said. To this end, the state invested AUD 5 million (EUR 3.11 million) to repair the disused Yeppoon branch line, so that cattle trains can now travel directly into Rockhampton’s JBS Abattoir. (ben)
