Watch out: overloaded trucks could soon be caught on camera
Overloaded trucks represent a problem for road traffic. Excess loads increase the risk of traffic accidents and do great damage to roads and bridges. Accurate and reliable measurements of trucks’ axle loads are essential to monitor overloading and take whatever measures are necessary as early as possible.
Scientists of the Frauenhofer Institute in Darmstadt (Germany) are currently studying weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems that can accurately register the weights of vehicles even on motorways.
These devices could soon be used as weight checks that can immediately supply photo evidence on overloaded trucks that will stand up in court, just like the speed cameras that take snap shots of speeding cars or cars that jump a red light, the Frauenhofer Institute said. (ben)
