War in Ukraine: a hard blow to intermodal traffic
The European combined transport declined slightly by 0.3% in 2022, according to UIRR. The domestic performance reached a historic high with 3.26 million teu, which represents an increase of 5.6% y-o-y.
Extra-EU – mostly intercontinental - traffic decreased by 48%. In terms of tkm handled, an all-time high was reached in 2022, both in terms of transport combined on a national (16.9 billion tkm +9.5%) and an intra-EU (68.5 billion tkm, +1.7%) level.
Extra-EU traffic declined by hitherto unthinkable proportions (3.1 billion tkm (-82.2%)). The result is a consequence of the war in Ukraine, which has clearly been a hard blow to intermodal traffic outside the EU, the association explained. (ben)
