VR joins track condition test

Finland is introducing a track condition monitoring in in-service trains. With the system, commercial trains will be used to collect data from various rail sections on a daily basis.

The pilot project will focus on monitoring the condition of elements such as isolation joints and switches and detecting rail defects and fractures, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency explained.

For the pilot, the measurement equipment has been installed in a Sr2 locomotive run by the Finnish rail operator VR. Measurement data is collected daily from an average distance of 800 km, amounting to 260,000 km of different rail sections over the entire measurement period.
