Virginian comeback

After a serious setback in Q2/2020 (see ITJ Daily of 17 May 2020), the port of Virginia came back strongly, enjoying its best December and handling more than 260,000 teu, a rise of 16%. In total, Q4/2020 saw more than 814,000 teu processed in the port’s two expanded VIG and NIT container terminals (+13%).

The good performance continued into January 2021 with approximately 271,000 teu handled. Two new ship-to-shore cranes that arrived in NIT’s south berth in autumn 2020 will now be complemented by two more such units set for delivery in early 2022.

These panamax gantries, which can work ultra-large containerships, are part of an investment programme worth more than USD 800 million that added more than 1 million teu of capacity between July 2019 and November 2020. (cd)
