USD 270 million cargo hub opens at JFK
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Realterm and Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) have officially opened a new consolidated cargo facility at JFK airport - the first major cargo infrastructure upgrade at the site in 25 years.
The 32,500 sqm facility centralises operations from four separate cargo zones, aiming to cut truck congestion, improve logistics flow, and accommodate long-term cargo growth. Operated by WFS, JFK’s main handler, the building features smart dock management systems, electric ground equipment and 280 sqm of temperature-controlled space for sensitive cargo.
JFK handled 1.67 million tonnes of cargo in 2024 - making it the eighth-busiest cargo airport in the US - and continues to grow as a vital hub for high-value goods. The new facility sets a new benchmark for sustainable, digitalised airfreight handling and is expected to create 100 permanent jobs, with a strong focus on local hiring. (ah)
