USA's dirty tanker exports surge
According to Bimco, the US dirty tanker export demand surged by 33% yoy in the first eight months of 2023, outpacing the global increase of 5%.
This growth, driven by rising US oil production, positions the USS as the second-largest contributor to dirty tanker demand, trailing only Saudi Arabia. East Asia is the primary destination, accounting for 20% of departures, and average sailing distances have increased by a third since 2016.
Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) have seen a substantial rise in demand, constituting 69% of US export deadweight tonne miles in 2023. As the USA’s oil production continues to grow, its impact on global dirty tanker demand is expected to increase further. (pb)
