USA: new terminal enhances railfreight flows
A milestone has been reached with the opening of the new intermodal terminal in the port of New York and New Jersey. The facility will enhance cargo movements by rail outside of NY/NJ region.
The terminal, which has four tracks designed for loading/unloading cargo from the Global Container Terminals (GCT) Bayonne terminal, has access to CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway lines.
At present, trucks move 85% of the containers on and off port terminals. The new rail facility will allow the port to achieve its goal of handling more than 900,000 rail lifts a year. This will result in 1.5 million fewer truck trips. (ben)
