USA invests in airports
The US department of transportation’s federal aviation administration (FAA) will award more than USD 627.7 million in infrastructure and safety projects through the FY/2021 airport improvement programme.
The funding includes 449 grants to 390 airports in 39 states, Puerto Rico and the Federated States of Micronesia.
One example is over USD 21.1 million grant for the construction of a new replacement airport in Newtok, AK. Scheduled for completion in 2023, the project is critical to the airport (WWT) and to the village, home to an Alaska Native community of 374 residents.
Both will relocate to higher ground because the surrounding ground is eroding. The residents depend solely on aviation to transport people, goods, mail, medicine and other essential services. (ah)
