USA: forging ahead with Carolina Lines project

The US shortline railroad operator R. J. Corman and Horry County government in South Carolina, recently started to press ahead with the USD 17.5 million Carolina Lines refurbishment project, which is expected to take four years.

R. J. Corman purchased the former Carolina Southern Railroad in 2015, and subsequently invested more than USD 3 million dollars to restore freight services.

Carolina Lines ran its first train in 2016, however, due to the disrepair of the track prior to the acquisition, trains are still limited to speeds of 8 - 16 km/h. The track refurbishment scheme will enable trains to run at higher speed, thus improving railfreight transport options for local industries. (ben)
