Urban river logistics project in Mulhouse

Mulhouse in Alsace (France) has launched a project to rethink urban river logistics from the Rhine to the city centre: Urban Logistic Solutions (ULS) was chosen to propose a low-carbon local delivery solution combining river transport and electrically assisted bicycles with trailers to bring goods into the city. “Low-carbon urban river logistic must take its rightful place in Mulhouse,” said Michèle Lutz, Mulhouse’s mayor.

Voies navigables de France (VNF) created this ambitious programme and chose ULS to “be partners of sustainable growth,” says Yann Quiquandon, VNF’s director for the Strasbourg region. ULS uses barges with on-board cranes, a 100% electric crane system and a pusher powered by gas-to-liquid (GTL). The partners will shortly be signing a temporary occupancy agreement (TOA) for a period of ten years. (lh)
