UPS to upgrade MCI capacities

The UPS air gateway at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is expanding the ramp from two aircraft parking spots to five. The new ramp will be 49,600 sqm, more than nine football fields in size. Construction is planned to begin late this month with completion in the fall of 2021.

In addition to the new ramp, UPS also will install new sorting equipment at the gateway, more than tripling package handling capacity to 5,000 packages per hour.

Between January and August 2020, the Missouri-based airport has handled 57,500 t of cargo, 12.8% less than in the same period of 2019. With a market share of 27.8%, UPS (16,100 t, -3.3%) came in second being Fedex (36,900 t, -6.6%). (ah)
