Upgrading cargo operations at DTW
In August 2023, Lufthansa Cargo and its local GHA Avflight started moving operations onto the apron at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). Initially, they will operate out of a former aircraft hangar that was converted into a temporary cargo warehouse.
In a second phase, Lufthansa Cargo will support Avflight in designing a new cargo facility next to the existing structure, which is planned to be operational by the end of 2024. The new location will allow for streamlined operations and shorter distances for loading and unloading aircraft.
The carrier currently handles over 500 t of cargo per year on seven weekly passenger flights, operates multiple truck connections to Chicago (ORD) in addition to ad-hoc services. From its new site, it will offer customers an improved product portfolio and reduced handling times. (ah)
